The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce

A novel of unsentimental allure, humor, and profound insight into the thoughts and feelings all of us bury deep within our hearts, THE UNLIKELY PILGRIMAGE OF HAROLD FRY introduces Rachel Joyce as a smart-and utterly irresistible-storyteller.

Meet HAROLD FRY, not too long ago retired. He lives in a small English village together with his wife, Maureen, who appears irritated by nearly every thing he does, even all the way down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates someday from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and throughout the stack of quotidian trivialities is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a girl he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

Harold pens a fast reply and, leaving Maureen to her chores, heads to the corner mailbox. But then, as happens in the easiest works of fiction, Harold has a chance encounter, one which convinces him that he completely should deliver his message to Queenie in person. And thus begins the unlikely pilgrimage on the heart of Rachel Joyce’s outstanding debut. HAROLD FRY is determined to walk 600 miles from Kingsbridge to the hospice in Berwick-upon-Tweed because, he believes, as long as he walks, Queenie Hennessey will live.

Still in his yachting shoes and lightweight coat, Harold embarks on his urgent quest across the countryside. Alongside the way in which he meets one fascinating character after one other, each of whom unlocks his lengthy-dormant spirit and sense of promise. Reminiscences of his first dance with Maureen, his wedding ceremony day, his pleasure in fatherhood, come speeding back to him-permitting him to additionally reconcile the losses and the regrets. As for Maureen, she finds herself lacking Harold for the primary time in years.

And then there may be the unfinished enterprise with Queenie Hennessy.
